Determined to keep her close friend group together now that life is pulling them in different directions after college, Elise sets up a final vacation for the five of them. A camping trip somewhere in the deep rural backwoods of Mississippi. Seeing herself as the glue that holds the group together, Elise is certain that the trip will ensure their bond survives the inevitable distance from each other.

But a wrong turn takes them off the map entirely—no cell signal, no road signs, no other cars. And when their vehicle breaks down on a dirt road surrounded by a suffocatingly dense forest, they have no choice but to walk in search of help. What they find instead is the territory of a man who has lived alone in these woods for decades, completely disconnected from civilization, surviving off the land and governed by his own brutal rules. He views Elise and the others as trespassers to be dealt with permanently, and he knows every inch of the terrain in ways the five friends never could.

The friend group, who have spent their lives in the comfortable modern world are suddenly trapped in an environment where none of their knowledge or skills matter, hunted by a man who operates devoid of compassion and possessing an intimate understanding of the landscape. As the friends are picked off one by one, desperation and fear fracture the group’s bonds—old resentments surface, selfish decisions are made, and the people who seemed confident and in control shatter under pressure.
